Community champion delivering anti-bullying workshops

Read Becca's story

Over the last ten years young people facing disadvantage have received over 27,500 hours of transformational mentoring from Olympic, Paralympic and world class athletes via Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. Over 4,700 young people have completed one of our transformational programmes and over 240,000 young people have been impacted through our inspirational programmes.

The Trust train and develop world class athletes to deliver personal, social and emotional development programmes for young people facing disadvantage. Through transformational mentoring, young people become empowered them to realise the attitudes and behaviours needed to lead a positive life.

Community Champions is designed to support and equip young people to become leaders and to increase social action within their communities. The programme is an opportunity for young people who have already completed the Trust’s flagship Get on Track mentoring programme, to develop their leadership skills further to become agents of social change within their peers, their families and their communities. Community Champions received funding from Sport England, with young people specifically being tasked to lead social action projects which use sport or physical activity to address an issue within their local community.”

As part of her Community Champions Social Action project, Becca delivered multi sports sessions at her local youth zone in Wirral, The Hive. This led to her becoming a long term volunteer at the Hive, volunteering three or four times a week and delivering anti-bullying sessions to other young people in her community.

Becca, Community Champion said:

"Bullying UK asked me if I wanted to carry on and be an Ambassador between the Hive and them... I want to be that person that young people can turn to, to have a chat with. You make a difference to young people's lives and you're giving them a friend they can rely on when they come here."

Jim Davies from the Wirral Youth Zone said:

"Becca's journey from our 'Get a Job' course to running projects with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and Bullying UK is now complete and she is a confident Volunteer and Mentor at The Hive. Seeing the change in her and the challenges she has faced is a remarkable transformation and we are all very proud of her achievements."
