Family Lives responds to access law change for children post divorce

Jeremy Todd, Family Lives Chief Executive said:

“Every year, Family Lives receives thousands of calls to its free confidential helpline, from separated parents struggling to make contact with their children or make relations with a former partner work. It is important that parents are supported to find a way of communicating and working together for the sake of their children. Family Lives supports families throughout relationship difficulties to encourage family stability.  However, some couples may need to access further support services, such as mediation, to address their problems and involve children in those plans.  It’s not just what’s convenient for the parents – parents should consider the best way to communicate with their children so that they understand what is going on but can also share their thoughts and feelings during what can be a difficult, traumatic and emotional time.”

Parents and carers struggling with contact and separation issues can call Family Lives’ Helpline on 0808 800 2222, contact the e-mail team via parentsupport@familylives.org.uk or visit the Family Lives and National Family Mediation websiteswww.familylives.org.uk and www.nfm.org.uk.
