Family Lives responds to Nottingham family jailed for placing methadone in child’s beaker

“News that Sally Dent and Shaun Binfield have been convicted of the manslaughter of their two-year-old son Riley – and Dent an additional charge of cruelty to a child - for failing to keep the methadone out of reach, is a tragedy that should never have happened.  It defies all logic that an adult would remove methadone from a child proof medical bottle and pour the potentially lethal substance into a child’s beaker.  Leaving a heroin substitute by the side of the bed to ensure convenience and ease of access whilst in a drug induced stupor and allowing a toddler to roam freely is indicative of the lapsed choices parents may make when under the influence of powerful narcotics.  All medicine and cleaning products must be out of reach of children, ideally in a locked cupboard several feet off the ground and when in use not left unattended.

A lifestyle centered on drugs has fatally impacted on this family and the end result now is a family ripped apart by a spiral of dependence and addiction with one child deceased and two parents facing a possible jail sentence.  We must ensure that tragedies like this never happen again and Family Lives is committed to helping everyone become more aware of drugs and their impact on family life.
