Interested in volunteering? Come celebrate with Gloucester Charity Families Lives & find out more

Gloucester based charity Family Lives will be having an open day on Tuesday the 19th of June to celebrate the work of its dedicated team of volunteers and to encourage others to consider volunteering. To attend, simply visit Palace Chambers, 41 London Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 2AJ between 10am and 4pm.

Family Lives recently launched its ‘Instructions Not Included’* campaign to encourage people to support one another via volunteering opportunities which calls for parents and other family members to engage with Family Lives’ broad range of support services to improve their own confidence, resilience, and abilities to help themselves and other parents, thereby preventing the escalation of parenting problems and to enable the organisations to reach out and support children and families.

Georgina Thompson, from the Forest of Dean, Gloucester attended a Family Lives parenting group and now works for the charity.  She said:

“I was attending a drop-in session with my son at my local public centre when I saw a poster advertising a Family Lives parenting group. What I really liked about the session was that it is such a safe and warm environment where I felt I could talk about myself, the little stresses I was having. I used to have very low self-esteem, so I felt that being in a safe environment was important. The first time we looked at feelings, I wasn't sure about how I felt. I either felt sad or happy, it was like learning a new language, lots of new words were to be used, it was like a new world opened up. After a while I thought: ‘I wanted to share this’ and I became a volunteer.”

Previous volunteers have found the work of Gloucestershire Family Lives to be invaluable in understanding and dealing with family issues and promoting self- confidence and self-esteem.
